A Kindergarten on the Mfuleni Campus
After a strong start in 2019, the kindergarten survived the existential crisis of the Covid lockdowns. By the end of 2023 it had reached independence – an important milestone.

How It Came About
After our involvement from 2012 to 2018 in the ECD component of the Power Child Campus Mfuleni, Power Child Germany announced its withdrawal from all projects at the end of 2018. Continuing the entire project on our own was not financially feasible.
We therefore set out to find other projects we could support.
A Fresh Start with Familiar Faces
In the meantime, four of the former staff members of the Power Child Campus had founded an NGO under South African law, completed all required registration processes, and signed a lease agreement with the municipality.
Their goal: to run a kindergarten on the campus serving children in age groups 2–3 years, 4–5 years, and pre-school, with full-day care for up to 100 children and around 8 caregivers.

Covid – and the Path to Independence
After a strong start in 2019, Covid and South Africa’s very strict lockdowns hit the kindergarten hard. With great effort, we managed to support the kindergarten through this difficult period.
By the end of 2023, the kindergarten had achieved independence – an important milestone for the project and the people who carry it forward.
